Havre is home to Montana State University – Northern. Havre serves as the "big city" for a huge radius of small towns. The nearest major city, Great Falls, is about 120 miles (190 km) to the south. Wild Horse Border Crossing into Canada is 44 miles north and it is one of the lowest volume ports between the countries. Towns along US Highway 2 in Montana are usually referred to as being on the "Hi Line".

When fire destroyed most of the town, many businesses moved into the basements and connected the basements with each other while the town was rebuilt. Adult $17, child (6-12) $9, under 5 free. Havre is along U.S. Highway 2. The town is also the northern terminus of U.S. Highway 87. 1 Havre Station, 235 Main St. Noon-5PM. Operates train service around the United States of America. (updated Mar 2022) Route stopping at Havre Empire Builder operating daily between Seattle/Portland and Chicago including stops at Spokane, Glacier National Park, Fargo, Saint Paul, and Milwaukee. The trains split into separate branches between Seattle and Spokane, and between Portland and Spokane, while operating as trains consisting of train cars from both branches between Spokane and Chicago.
