Traveler Guide to Williamson, NY

Williamson is a rural community in the Finger Lakes Apple Country region of New York State. The town is located in Wayne County, NY and named after the land agent of the Pulteney Purchase, Charles Williamson. The hamlet of Pultneyville is on Lake Ontario, in the northern portion of the town, and the hamlet of East Williamson is in the eastern part. It is bordered by Ontario to the west, Sodus to the east, and Marion to the south.

Rootstock Ciderworks, 3274 Eddy Rd, ☏ +1 315-589-8733. Tasting room: Sa Su noon-5PM, M-F by appt. Distilling is making a comeback in New York, and so Finger Lakes Apple Country now has its first such (legal) establishment since the end of Prohibition. It's a new venture from a long-time apple grower, DeFisher Fruit Farms, and, like most modern distilleries, has patterned itself much like a winery—tasting room and all. The distillery's signature spirit is Tree Vodka, distilled from (no surprise) apples. They also make drinks using pears, berries, peaches, and other fruit, but don't think that means they're laden with sugar; the sugar gets turned into alcohol during the distilling process.
