Arrive at destination
Plan for a single stop during your 186.2-mile journey to keep your focus sharp on these technical local roads. Since the drive is turn-heavy, leaving during daylight hours is essential to ensure you can clearly see the road transitions and navigate the curves safely. Budgeting $30 for fuel should cover your needs, but keeping a little extra in reserve is wise given the stop-and-go nature of local roads. Because this trip is comfortably completed in one day, you have the flexibility to depart whenever suits your schedule best. Keep a close eye on your GPS, as the reliance on local roads like Pond Fork and Harper Road means you will be making frequent directional changes throughout the trip.

Seasonal Notes
Summer travel usually means heavier construction, hotter rest stops, and busier weekend traffic around major cities.
Winter travel shortens daylight, so a route that looks manageable on paper can feel much longer after dark.
Holiday weekends tend to make both departure and arrival windows slower than the raw route time suggests.
Time zone
Origin and destination are on the same clock, so arrival timing is easier to judge at a glance.
Temperature spread
A meaningful temperature swing is a good cue to rethink layers, water, and how soon you want to arrive.
Road read
Use the two city cards together: check the sky where you start, then compare it with the local time and temperature at arrival.

Expect a technical, hands-on driving experience rather than a monotonous interstate cruise, as this route features a 0% highway share. You will navigate winding local roads that demand your full attention, making it a trip for those who prefer an active drive over high-speed cruising. The path relies on secondary roads like Bolt Road, which dictates a slower, deliberate pace throughout the 3-hour and 19-minute duration. Because the journey is entirely composed of local thoroughfares, the road character remains consistently demanding with frequent turns. Prepare for a steady, rhythmic drive that requires you to stay engaged with the road surface and the winding nature of the terrain.
This route mixes highway mileage with some local-road sections near the start or finish. There are only a few real navigation decisions along the way. The trickiest moment comes around 34.5 miles in.

Summersville
Fairmont, nicknamed the "Friendly City", is a city of 18,313 people (as of 2020) in West Virginia, and the county seat of Marion County (pop. 56,000). It was established in 1820 as Middletown, and changed in 1843 to Fairmont, short for "Fair Mountain". The city is located on the Monongahela River at its origin at the confluence of the Tygart Valley River flowing northwest from Grafton, and the West Fork River flowing north from Clarksburg. Fairmont claims to be the origin of the Pepperoni Roll, West Virginia's official state food. Mary Lou Retton — a gold-medalist gymnast in the 1984 Olympics, who was highly popular around the country and particularly in West Virginia — came from Fairmont.
