Trip Overview

Traveling from Lake Placid to Brooklyn covers approximately 300.2 miles of New York scenery. You should budget about 5 hours and 25 minutes for the journey, making it a feasible, albeit long, one-day trip. With a fuel cost estimate of $47, it remains an accessible trek for those heading from the Adirondacks down to the city. Because the route relies on local roads rather than major interstates, you will need to account for extra time navigating through various towns. While you could technically complete this in a single day, be prepared for a full day of active driving. Since you are moving from the remote Northeast region into the dense urban environment of Brooklyn, expect the pace of the drive to shift significantly as you approach your destination.

Trip Plan

To keep your drive manageable, plan for at least one dedicated stop to break up the 5-hour and 25-minute duration. Given the reliance on local roads, departing early in the morning is your best strategy to avoid getting stuck in localized traffic patterns. Since your fuel costs will hover around $47, it is wise to monitor your gauges while navigating the non-highway sections where gas stations may be less frequent than on major thoroughfares. Because this route is entirely local, use your navigation tools to stay updated on road-specific closures or construction along Colden Avenue. Embracing the flexibility of this route allows you to pull over whenever you need a rest, turning a long day into a more comfortable experience.

Wind Advisory

Wind Advisory issued April 18 at 2:37AM EDT until April 19 at 12:00AM EDT by NWS Burlington VT

Seasonal Notes

Summer travel usually means heavier construction, hotter rest stops, and busier weekend traffic around major cities.

Winter travel shortens daylight, so a route that looks manageable on paper can feel much longer after dark.

Holiday weekends tend to make both departure and arrival windows slower than the raw route time suggests.

Time zone

Same local time

Origin and destination are on the same clock, so arrival timing is easier to judge at a glance.

Temperature spread

21 degrees warmer at arrival

A meaningful temperature swing is a good cue to rethink layers, water, and how soon you want to arrive.

What kind of drive is this?

Expect a turn-heavy local drive that demands your full attention behind the wheel. Unlike a monotonous interstate slog, this route features zero highway miles, meaning you will stay off high-speed freeways for the entire 300.2-mile distance. You will navigate via Colden Avenue, Mill Pond Drive, and South Main Street, which keeps you engaged with the local landscape throughout the trip. Because the longest uninterrupted stretch is 0 miles on Colden Avenue, you should anticipate constant maneuvering rather than long, straight cruises. This personality makes the drive feel more intimate and grounded, though it requires more focus than a typical highway cruise.

58% highway, the rest on surface roads — varied driving throughout.
38 navigation steps total — most of the decisions cluster near the start and finish.
Longest single stretch: 118.6 mi on I 87.

About the Cities

Starting in Lake Placid, NY

Full guide →

For the city in Florida, see Lake Placid (Florida). Lake Placid is a village of 2,400 people (2019) in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, near the center of the town of North Elba and named after an adjacent lake. While the village is a year-round resort, it is most known as the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. In a 1980 USA-USSR hockey game, the "Miracle on Ice," a group of American college students and amateurs upset the heavily-favored Soviet national ice hockey team 4-3. Two days later, they won the gold medal. Lake Placid hosts a Winter Olympics summer training facility where one can watch sports like ski jumping, aerial jumping and figure skating. The town is charming and fun for the outdoorsy and/or adventure-spirited.

Arriving in Brooklyn, NY

Full guide →

Founded 1634

Brooklyn, the "Borough of Homes and Churches," is one of the five boroughs of New York City. It used to be a separate city, and still feels much like one. It has about 2.5 million inhabitants. If separated from the rest of New York City, Brooklyn would be the 4th most populous American city. Brooklyn is on the westernmost point of Long Island and shares a land boundary with Queens, which partially encircles Brooklyn to the north, east and south; Manhattan lies across the East River to the west and north of Brooklyn, and Staten Island is across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to the southwest. Brooklyn is enjoying a period of growth and affluence not seen since before World War II. The Brooklyn Academy of Music boasts world-class theater performances, and the nearby Barclays Center is the home of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets.

Frequently Asked Questions

The longest stretch is about 118.6 miles on I 87. The full list of main roads is in the Roads section above.

Expect about $16.00 in tolls one way, starting with Holland Tunnel. Most Northeast and Midwest toll agencies accept E-ZPass; in the West and Texas, transponders like TxTag or FasTrak apply. If you do not have a transponder, cashless tolling plates will mail a bill to the vehicle's registered address — usually with a surcharge, so a rental-car toll pass is often cheaper than paying by mail.

We did not find dedicated rest areas on this route. For a drive this long, plan bathroom and stretch breaks around gas stations, fast-food stops, or small-town downtowns — check the Nearby Places section for options.

It helps. This route has a higher-than-average number of complex decision points, which get harder in the dark. If the last hour of the trip is on surface roads or mountain grades, aim to arrive at Brooklyn, NY before sunset when you can. Check the Trip Plan for departure windows that land you in daylight.

Only with planning. This is a long drive for kids — consider splitting it into two days rather than pushing through. Plan at least 1 meaningful breaks. Dedicated rest areas are limited, so plan gas or food stops as your bathroom breaks.
