The name of Raeford is a combination of the last syllables of 2 of its earliest settlers, John McRae, and A.A. Wilford. The two men used the name Raeford for the post office they established and would later have the town named after them One of Raeford's defining features is its deep-rooted history, dating back to the early 19th century.
