Newport is a small city in the Rocky Mountain foothills of northeast Washington State, on the border with Idaho. It is the county seat of Pend Oreille County.
1 Pend Oreille County Historical Museum, 402 S Washington Ave, ☏ +1-509-447-5388. 10AM - 4PM daily, May 1 - mid-October. A 1908-vintage train depot, and three 19th-century log cabins relocated to this site, house exhibits of the local history. $6. (updated Apr 2023) 2 Manresa Grotto, 6196 LeClerc Rd N, Cusick (on the Kalispel Reservation near Usk, on the east side of the Pend Oreille River). A very unusual-looking cave, sacred to the Kalispel people. Perhaps formed by a long-ago inland sea. 3 Crawford State Park, 425 Gardner Cave Rd, Metaline Falls (11 mi (18 km) north of Metaline near SR 31, follow signs for park), ☏ +1 509-446-4065, [email protected]. A day-use park which is mostly about seeing Gardner Cave, the third-largest limestone cave in Washington. 4 Lions Excursion Train, 101 Railroad Ave, Ione (depot is at the end of Main St), ☏ +1-509 442-5466, [email protected]. A sightseeing ride in four-wheel railroad bikes, hugging cliffs and crossing trestles along the Pend Oreille river. Spectacular sights. Takes about 2 hours. Operated by the local Lions Club. 5 Roosevelt Grove of Ancient Cedars (Granite Falls Trail). A grove of majestic ancient cedar trees, preserved by Teddy Roosevelt. Located on Washington side of the border, but access is from Priest Lake, Idaho. (updated Sep 2025)
