Traveler Guide to Newburgh, NY

Newburgh is a small, riverside city in Orange County, New York.

Located on the west banks of the mighty Hudson River with a population of 28,856 in 2020, Newburgh is a city with a long history. Once an important retail and industrial community on the river some 60 mi (97 km) north of the City of New York, Newburgh fell on hard times during the latter half of the 20th century, when the city's industrial base diminished, racial conflicts began heating up, and the urban renewal projects designed to combat the issues in the 1960s and 1970s ran into trouble. Despite all this, Newburgh is home to many incredible historic landmarks and some absolutely breathtaking views of the Hudson and the surrounding area. It is also a very diverse community, rich in many different cultures, and is home to Mount Saint Mary College – an excellent liberal arts college.

1 Washington's Headquarters. 2 Dutch Reformed Church.

1 Pride of the Hudson, Hudson River Adventures, Inc., 100 Brower Road, Monroe (Newburgh Landing on Newburgh waterfront), ☏ +1 845-220-2120, toll-free: +1 800-979-3370, [email protected]. variable; check online schedule. 2 hr. narrated cruise of Newburgh Bay and Hudson Highlands. $22, $18 senior and child 4-11, 3 and under free. 2 Bannerman Island Cruise and Walking Tour, 26 Front Street, Newburgh (departs Torches Landing, Newburgh and Beacon Landing, Beacon.), ☏ +1 845-220-2120. Cruise south to the ruins of the Bannerman Castle where you will get off the boat for a 1½- hour guided tour of Bannerman Island by the Bannerman Castle Trust. 3 River Rose Cruises, Newburgh Waterfront, ☏ +1 845-562-1067. Cruise the beautiful Hudson River aboard an authentic Mississippi stern-driven paddlewheeler. Sightseeing cruises, Sunday brunch cruises, dinner cruises, and dance party cruises. Season runs from May 1st to October 31st.

1 Il Cena'colo, 228 S. Plank Rd, ☏ +1 845 564-4494. (NY 52). This unassuming eatery in an out-of-the-way location is reputedly the Hudson Valley's best Italian restaurant. To appreciate the magnitude of that accomplishment, consider that its competition includes all the restaurants in affluent, populous Rockland and Westchester counties.

1 Benmarl Winery, 156 Highland Ave, Marlboro (Off US 9W from just south of the county line.), ☏ +1 845 236-4265, [email protected]. Noon-6PM daily April–September. Wines pressed from grapes grown in America's oldest vineyard. $8 for tasting six wines.

1 Courtyard Newburgh Stewart Airport, 4 Governor Dr, ☏ +1 845 567-4800, fax: +1 845 567-9550.

The small 1 Stewart International Airport is located 5 mi (8.0 km) east of Newburgh in and has limited flights by American, Delta and JetBlue Airways. There is a ferry which crosses the Hudson from Newburgh, which connects with nearby Beacon and its Metro-North station. Sailings are limited to serve commuters, with departures at 5-9AM and 5-8:30PM. 2 Newburgh Ferry Terminal is next to downtown and the marina. Newburgh has no railway services in itself, but Metro North serves Beacon during peak hours with its Hudson Line from Grand Central Terminal in New York City. Beacon station is next to the ferry landing, allowing for an easy transfer.

While there are some very nice areas of the city, Newburgh is still a city, and there are many areas which suffer from poverty, drug use, and gang violence – in addition to illegal immigration. Much of the violence in the city is not targeted against tourists, and so if you use common sense and mind your own business, you will be fine. At night, it is best to stick to a car if you must move about the area – and it is equally-wise to stick to the most heavily-used routes and to avoid venturing into an area which appears shade (this latter tip is also applicable for during the day). If you must walk at night, be sure to avoid walking alone – especially if you are a woman. Just as you would anywhere else in the United States, in case of an emergency, dial 911.
