For the Canadian community of the same name, see Montague (Prince Edward Island) Montague is a township in Sussex County, in the Skylands region of New Jersey in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States of America. It is located at "the top of New Jersey", including the highest point in the state, as well as being the furthest north of the State, being bordered by New York and the Delaware River, across from Pennsylvania. Montague was named by King George II of England, however no one knows why he gave it the name he did. There is a lot of local speculation on how he came up with the name.

Beautiful state park (particularly in the fall) with hills and deciduous forest, lots of hiking, camping, cross-county skiing, swimming, fishing, and wildlife (particularly white-tailed deer and black bears, less commonly beaver, many birds can be seen including woodpeckers, wild turkey, pheasant, and large raptors such as eagles, hawks, and owls). Includes high point monument (the highest point in New Jersey), lots of lakes and streams. Largest state park in New Jersey. Entrance fee from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day. $5.00 Resident/$10.00 non-Resident. 2 Stokes State Forest (Stokes Forest), 1 Coursen Road, Branchville (Take Route 206, four miles north of Branchville, NJ or 11 miles north of Newton, NJ.), ☏ +1 973 948-3820. Lush, beautiful old-growth forest, great views from Sunrise Mountain, especially in the fall. Lots of hiking, camping, cross-country skiing, swimming, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and wildlife. Includes portions of the Appalachian Trail. Camping, hiking, fishing, boating, swimming, Ice skating in winter. Montague is particularly beautiful when the leaves change in the fall. Public and private campgrounds are available throughout Montague. Public camp sites are available at several locations within High Point State Park off Route 23. Hiking throughout the area is provided on a network of trails through High Point State Park, Stokes State Forest, and the Delaware Gap National Recreation Area. These trails include a beautiful section of the Appalachian Trail. Historic homes and buildings may be found in Montague.

Route 206 Approximately 12 miles north of Branchville, NJ or 19 miles north of Newton, NJ. Route 23 Approximately 13 miles north of Sussex, NJ. Interstate 84 NY Exit 1, then take Route 23 south into Montague. Take NJ Transit Port Jervis line all the way to Port Jervis from Hoboken or the Seacacus Transfer Station, all the way to Port Jervis NY. From the Port Jervis station, it is possible to get a taxi or other transportation into Montague (about a 5-10 minute trip, depending on where you are going). The Appalachian Trail passes through Montague, hikers and backpackers are afforded beautiful scenery.

Primary transportation in Montague is by driving. There are a network of winding state and county roads. In winter it is wise to pay close attention to warnings concerning ice and cold weather.
