Manhasset, NY Road Trips

Manhasset is the main community in the Greater Manhasset area of the Town of North Hempstead. The hamlet is also North Hempstead's Town Seat and Town Hall is located in the heart of its business district. In addition to the hamlet, the Greater Manhasset area is the anchor community for the villages of Munsey Park, Plandome, Plandome Heights, and Plandome Manor, and also serves as the anchor community for parts of the villages of Flower Hill and North Hills. The Manhasset Census-designated place includes the smaller hamlet of Strathmore, which was developed by Levitt & Sons.

1 Greentree, 220 Community Dr, ☏ +1 516 684-2540. The former estate of Payne Whitney. It contains beautiful buildings on a beautiful, 400-acre (1.6 km2) property. It is one of the largest undeveloped areas in Nassau County and is now home to a philanthropic nonprofit called the Greentree Foundation. Greentree was the site of the famous Manhasset Negotiations. This historic building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 2006. (updated Apr 2023) 3 North Shore University Hospital, 300 Community Dr, ☏ +1 516 869 6311. A major hospital and medical research facility known internationally for its impeccable care. A visit to Manhasset by anybody interested in medicine and medical research would be incomplete without passing by or walking around the large campus. (updated Apr 2023) 4 Strathmore. This large neighborhood of Manhasset (which consists of North Strathmore, South Strathmore, Strathmore–Vanderbilt, and Strathmore Village) is one of the best-known Levitt & Sons Strathmore developments ever constructed (four, if counting each of those subdivisions separately). The Long Island Rail Road's Port Washington Branch has a station in Manhasset and offers frequent service to/from Manhattan and Port Washington.

Manhasset is generally a very safe place to visit at all times of the day and night. There is an area called Spinney Hill (by Whitney Pond Park off Community Drive) which consists of two of the North Hempstead Housing Authority's public housing projects (Spinney Hill Homes and Pond View Homes). Despite the stories associated with housing projects generally-speaking, this area is not very dangerous and is of little interest to a tourist (although the former Manhasset Valley School, which is now a community center, is a beautiful old building with an interesting history), and the Nassau County Police Department's 6th Precinct headquarters is located just down the street. The one place in the hamlet where one should exercise just a teeny-weeny bit of extra caution is at the Travelodge on Northern Boulevard. Any local can tell you that this establishment is notorious for housing sex offenders and for being the location of drug deals every once-in-a-while during the overnight hours. Regardless of this, the area remains very safe, the cops are always in the area and on the case, and there is a great Chinese restaurant right next to the hotel; Pearl East is always packed for dinner.
