Traveler Guide to Kingston, TN

Kingston is a city in Tennessee. This seat of Roane County was a frontier town back in 1792 centered around Fort Southwest Point. In 1807, it was actually the Tennessee state capital for a day, too, before the Tennessee General Assembly reconvened in Nashville. It had some Union sentiments during the Civil War. In 2008, a nasty impoundment of fly ash slurry from the Kingston Fossil Plant (coal) broke open, leaching pollution everywhere. People today often recognize Kingston by the two tall smokestacks of the Kingston Steam Plant when driving by on I-40.

Fort Southwest Point, 1225 S Kentucky St. Reconstructed fort that used to be the start of Kingston circa 1792, on the edge of the frontier. Tel: +1 865-376-3641.

Kingston City Park,, 333 W Race St. Park and beach along Watts Bar Lake or the Clinch River where you can go swimming, although ack sometimes there's talk of PCBs. Tel: +1 865-376-9476.

Whitestone Inn, 1200 Paint Rock Rd, ☏ +1 865 376-0113. Fifty-acre rural bed-and-breakfast property on Watts Bar Lake with view of the Smoky Mountains. Dining. Facilities for weddings and events. (updated Mar 2023)
