Traveler Guide to Eufaula, AL

Eufaula is a town on the west bank of the Chattahoochee River in the River Heritage region of Alabama, and like that river, Eufaula is a real sleeper, though it has a dark restive past, with secessionists terrorizing abolitionists before the Civil War, and white supremacists killing at least 7 black people during the Election Riot of 1874, not to mention municipal officials postponing integration as much as possible. All that aside though, some nice historical architecture remains to be seen.

1 The Shorter Mansion, 340 N Eufaula Ave, ☏ +1 334-687-3793. M-Sa 10AM-4PM. A Classical Revival-style home that was built in 1884 and rebuilt in 1906 after it had burned. It features tours and a museum on the second floor. (updated Sep 2021) 2 Hart House, 211 N Eufaula Ave. Greek Revival home dating back to 1850, making it one of the oldest in Eufaula. Not really open to the public. (updated Sep 2021) 3 Fendall Hall, 917 W Barbour St, ☏ +1 334-687-8469. M-Sa 10AM-4PM. Italianate-style home with wood construction and a cupola that was built around 1856. (updated Sep 2021) 4 The Seth Lore and Irwinton Historic District, 500 N Randolph. The historical commercial strip of Eufaula that could be worth a stroll. (updated Sep 2021) 5 The Tree That Owns Itself, at junction of Cotton, Highland, and N Eufaula Aves. An obscure landmark with some lore about the tree taking ownership of the land where it has put down its roots. (updated Sep 2021)

1 Yoholo Micco Rail Trail, 404 E Broad St. This rail trail with a Creek Indian name is anchored by Manny the 12-Foot-Tall Fish statue at the south end and Old Creek Town Recreation Center on the north for walking and biking adventures along the Chattahoochee. (updated Sep 2021) 2 Old Creek Town Recreation Area, 1198 Lake Dr, ☏ +1 334-687-1213. A Chattahoochee riverside park with somewhat of an ambiguous swimming area. Offers pretty views nonetheless. (updated Sep 2021) 3 Lakepoint State Park, 104 Old Hwy 165, ☏ +1 334-687-8011. Another but even grander riverside park where you might even see an alligator (also known as Mr. Chompy if you're out swimming). It has a resort with a cafeteria/buffet, cabins, pool, and campground as well. (updated Sep 2021)

1 Quality Inn & Suites Quality Inn Near Lake Eufaula, 631 E Barbour St, ☏ +1 334-370-0462. Staying here you can get a glimpse of the river from your room or at least from the pool. $67.
