Traveler Guide to Demopolis, AL

Demopolis is the largest city of Marengo County in the River Heritage region of Alabama.

Imagine a haven for French expatriates in the newly emerging United States of America. That is the story of Demopolis. In 1817, it was founded by a group of French refugees whose previous home on Saint-Domingue (present day Haiti and Dominican Republic) was overtaken in a slave revolt. From there, it grew to become a typical albeit sometimes raucous Southern town with cotton production at the fore. Demopolis lies at the confluence of the Tombigbee and Black Warrior Rivers in an area where two topographical regions, the Canebrake and Black Belt, meet.

1 Gaineswood, 805 S Cedar Ave, ☏ +1 334 289-4846. Tu-Sa 10AM-4PM. A Greek Revival plantation home built between 1843-1861. (updated Sep 2021) 2 Bluff Hall, 407 N Commissioners Ave, ☏ +1 334 289-9644. Another Greek Revival plantation estate. (updated Sep 2021)

1 Spillway Falls - Lower Pool. This incongruous waterfall on the Tombigbee River is really just a spillway but makes for nice viewing and relaxing. Some walking trails too. (updated Sep 2021)

1 Foscue Creek Park, 1800 Lock and Dam Rd, ☏ +1 334 289-5535. Little campsites along the Tombigbee River. (updated Sep 2021) 2 Best Western Plus Two Rivers Hotel & Suites, 662 US-80 W, ☏ +1 334 289-2611. It just looks like an ordinary hotel, but an outdoor pool and free breakfast are included anyway. (updated Sep 2021)

Demopolis is centered at the junction of Highways 43 and 80, the former of which connects the town to Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and the latter joining it to Meridian and Montgomery.
