Traveler Guide to Danvers, MA

Danvers is a town in Massachusetts with a population of about 28,000 (2020). A large part of the town used to be called "Salem Village" and was where most of the accusers in the 1692 witch hysteria lived. The trials took place in neighboring Salem.

Former Danvers State Insane Asylum, 1101 Kirkbride Dr. A very good example of the Kirkbride style asylum that was once extremely common in the United States, and made famous from the 2001 horror film Session 9, which was filmed in the complex when it was abandoned. Much of the asylum complex was demolished in 2007, but the main Kirkbride building remains, and now houses the Bradlee Danvers apartment complex, and thus not open to the public. From Boston, take Route 1 to I-95 or Route 128 north. Exits 41-43 on 128 are the exits for Danvers. The MBTA 435 and 436 buses from Lynn (and Salem for the former) can get you to Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers.
